6 Drain Cleaning Tips To The Rescue
Nothing is more frustrating than dealing with clogged drains in the home. They can create huge messes and unsanitary conditions quickly. However, there are some things you can try before calling your plumbing professionals at Apex Plumbing & Sewer. Here are six drain cleaning tips to help you avoid headaches.
1. Remove the Trap
If your clog is in one of the sinks, try removing the drain trap. Chances are, something is in the “S” or “P” part of the trap. Most drains are PVC plastic, and it’s not hard to remove the nut and check inside. Make sure to put a bucket or container underneath the drain beforehand, to catch the water.
2. Toilet Clogs
Clogged toilets are messy, so turn off the water supply before you attempt any drain cleaning. This prevents the problem from escalating. Next, pour hot water into your toilet bowl and let it set for a few minutes. It may dissolve the clog. If not, try your plunger.
3. Wet/Dry Shop Vacuum
Your shop vacuum might just suck the clog right out of the drain. You’ll need to get a tight seal between the hose and drain for best results. It doesn’t always work, but it’s worth a try.
4. Dish Soap
In some cases, putting dish soap in the drain can help, especially if you have a grease clog. After letting the soap sit for a while, try adding hot water.
5. Avoid Boiling Water
It’s OK to use hot water, but boiling water is not a good idea. It can damage plastic pipes and cause them to leak. Water too hot may crack your toilet, also.
6. Use Drain Cleaning Chemicals with Caution
Drain cleaners are caustic and can burn the skin. Be very careful with chemicals and if you are not sure what to do, then call a drain specialist.
