Avoiding Plumbing Woes During the Holidays

By on Dec 8, 2017 in blog, Plumbing, Plumbing Repair Service |

It’s never a good time to have plumbing problems, but it’s really not fun to have them around the holidays. Here are some tips to lower your chances of common holiday plumbing problems.

Turn Off Outdoor Taps

During cold weather, turn off the water to outside taps. If your garage isn’t kept heated, be sure to turn water off out there, too, otherwise you run the risk of broken pipes and an icy mess.

Be Careful About What You Flush

Flushing excessive leftovers, oil, or anything with the potential to clog drains. This includes the kitchen drains along with toilets. Be careful what your guests flush, too. Flushable bathroom wipes and feminine hygiene products can be very hard on your pipes and are the cause of many plumbing repair charges.

While flushable wipes are marketed as flushable, they can cause problems with plumbing. Dispose of them in the trash instead of flushing. Be sure there’s a trash bin in your washroom for guests to help avoid the temptation to flush and put flushable wipes away, particularly if children visit as they are likely to flush and to flush too many at once.

Consider Preventative Maintenance Before Holidays

Having drains snaked by your local plumber and using household drain clearing products before the holidays could help you lower the chances of needing emergency plumbing repairs.

Review Local Plumbers and Have a Number Ready

Having a plumber’s phone number ready is a good idea. It’s best to review local options before you need them so that you have a number ready for an emergency. By doing some checking on local plumbers with good reputations, you’ll know who to call if there is a problem that needs to be dealt with swiftly.

If you do run into a problem, helpful plumbing repair is just a phone call away. At Apex Plumbing & Sewer Inc., we offer around the clock plumbing repair services.
